A chore to read, but very interesting info. Written when the use of language was an art. Many words that have not been in common use for a hundred years. With all that said, I am thoroughly enjoying this book. Wylie is certainly proud of his heritage, I am not sure all of his "facts" are exactly correct, particularly as pertains to religion and his views of the Roman Catholic church.
Have another, light reading, book available to switch off to when the going gets laborious.

History of the Scottish Nation All Volumes James A Wylie 9781522822912 Books Reviews
I have been unable to locate any indication as to when this book was written because I bought the version, but the writing style and the references to sources give me the impression that it is a very old book. I bought this as a resource book in tracking the people of Scotland before there was a Scotland. It will not serve my purpose. In fairness I am only a couple of hundred pages into the book but it took perseverance and effort to get that far. This seems to be a very old book unsuited to which might be better appreciated if I could leaf through it, read sections, and look at illustrations.
Just pinned down that James Wylie lived from 1808 to 1890 which answers all my questions. I apologize for my ignorance and my failure to check the Internet earlier, but I was misled by the date on which this edition was printed, May 2, 2013. If you are interested in the beliefs and writing style of the second half of the 1800s this book may interest you. If you are interested in the history of Scotland this book will not interest you.
I have read any number of histories from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, so I have dealt with opinionated and ethno-centric authors in the past. But none have been as bad as James Wylie. His anti-Catholic bias continually gets in the way of the story he is trying to tell, The Roman Catholic Church was not the heart of darkness and the Iona Church was not all goodness and light. Wylie goes on and on about how there were no Catholic bishops in Scotland until a certain time, and yet his description of St. Columba and the abbots of Iona show that they were bishops in all but name. Furthermore, equating the the early Celtic Chuch as some type of proto-Protestant Church is way over the top.
I could go on, but I won't. The author's anti-Catholic polemics and obvious agenda do not belong in a serious history. I you are looking for a history of this place and time, look elsewhere, If you are looking for an anti-Catholic screed by an author with an axe to grind, this book is for you.
James Wylie is the best historian for his time and is not surpassed today. He is a writer, poet, theologian and historian. He makes history sound like music.
If you have not read any of his history books you are so much poorer in literature and truth.

This book is absolutely fascinating in spite of all of the spelling errors as well as the missing passage in part 2, Chapter 5 (of which I was able to find the actual book online and write in the missing passage).
